And I am curious. I read here about those who seem to brag about no longer watching Days. Reasons given are their favs no longer on show, or unhappy with storylines, or writers, just various things. So...is the intention to help get the show cancelled? It cannot be to try and get their favs back, or storyline changed. Heck, with filming 6 mos. in advance, whatever is already done. If Days is cancelled, it means the end. No more fav couple, character, better story for whoever. And ratings are important. So, "no longer watching" has a huge impact, but perhaps not the one intended. And if, no longer interested in the show, no longer watching, no longer caring, then why continue to visit the boards? I mean no disrespect, I honestly just do not get the thinking/reasoning behind declarations of not watching any more, yet...staying, commenting, etc. among those whose who are watching. It just seems that contributing to a ratings decline would mean one wants the show gone completely. Again, I mean no disrespect, just want to understand the thinking. |

I don't watch DAYS or any US soap, but the last thing I want is for any soap to get cancelled. So while it no longer appeals to me, which is why I don't watch. I'm glad there are people enjoying it and I want the ratings to be healthy and the show to stay on. Just because I don't enjoy it, I certainly don't begrudge anybody who does. I don't post much, but I certainly don't brag about not watching. I do keep track of what's going on via this board, just in case there's something I might want to tune in for. |

There are days when I watch & days when I don't want to watch because of who is on, and days when I simply can't watch because life happens. Reasons I watch - my fave couple is on. Either of them or both, I try to tune in & keep up with whatever they're involved in. Other storylines that I want to see - the serial killer s/l was very good, IMO - RSW really hit his stride and BF was amazing. Kudos to the rest of the cast as well. I'm not really in to Chabby (ducks for cover) since Abby bores the shit out of me, but BF is a great find - some days, I'm simply mesmerized by his performance. Steve & Kayla are my 2nd ship and I really REALLY like JJ & Gabi. Honorable mentions to Brady (when he's not with the Creature), Belle, Kate, Victor, Andre, Philip & some others. Reasons I don't watch: I'm not here for forced pairings (Creature/Brady, Rafe/Hope, Nicole/Daniel, Nicole/Daniel2, Kate/WhicheverNewGuy) or boring/overdrawn storylines. Oddly enough, I loved the serial killer s/l, but I really think it was dragged out FAR too long & the resolution that we're watching now is wonky at best. But others like it, so out of sheer respect for their viewing pleasure, I try not to rain on their parade. Do I want Days cancelled? FUCK NO. I went through watching AMC's demise under the thumb of the House of Mousefucks and that pain (yeah, it's not real life, but it kinda is) is not something I want to go through again. But to be honest, I'm not 100% sure whether my viewing (or not) counts towards ratings points. I follow on twitter & try to use the #Days tag - does that count? Or is it still #Days50? I also hang out here (much to some people's chagrin) and try to keep up with storylines, characters, etc...does that count? Does my viewing and/or opinion matter? I hope it does. Just the thought of the C word about Days makes me nauseous. And I'm 100% on board with the "If you want to see any chance of your fave character/couple EVER AGAIN, you need to watch! NO ONE can come back to a show that's no longer on the air!!!" bandwagon. Been there, done that, DO NOT WANT. |

I stopped watching for a very long time because the show couldn't hold my interest. The writing was sloppy, the characters were one-dimensional, and the storylines were beyond predictable. Why watch a show that can't hold your attention? I continued to visit the board because I do love Days. It's been a part of my life since I was born. I continued to care about what was happening but I wasn't going to waste an hour of my life watching a terrible show when I could spend that hour reading a summary and doing more productive things. It wasn't to stick it to the show or campaign for any character or couple...the show simply sucked. Under no circumstances did I want the show cancelled. The show is a part of me and a large part of my family's history. I want it on forever for that reason alone. They're just like that cousin that needs to get his shit together. You don't like him but you don't want him out of the family. ;) |

I haven't regularly watched the show since the new writers took over. There only one character on the show now that I care about and they only appear once a month currently. I don't really have a reason to post here anymore but I still come to get news about the show, to find out when the last character I care about appears or to keep tabs on the lovely people who hang out here on the forum. I think it's unfair to solely blame people who are dissatisfied the show for it's demise. The TPTB deserve most of the blame IMO. They are responsible for the poor casting, lazy writing and unnecessary censorship that keeps me away. I want DOOL to continue on air indefinitely but forcing someone to tune into a show they are no longer interested in is not realistic at all. |

Even if every member of this board decided to quit the show today, it wouldn't cause such a significant (if any) drop in the ratings that would cause the show's cancellation. Days' survival isn't dependent on the online fandom of one message board. So no..the people who don't watch aren't doing it to get the show cancelled. They're simply not interested in what's being offered.

Question here...aren't the "ratings" the Neilsen Ratings? If you're not a Neilsen Family isn't not watching Days meaningless as far as ratings are concerned?

I stopped watching last year because every character I was even kind of interested in was boring. Paul Narita as a character connected to Sonny is what brought me back, and then eventually Chabby is what is keeping me around right now. Do I want the show canceled? Nah. It drives me nuts sometimes and I've hated several stories, but at the end of the day I'd miss it. I've been watching it off/on for far too long. It'd be weird not having it around. |

I think nowadays they take into account the people who watch their shows online. I could be wrong, but I thought they were at least starting to do that. |

I think unless you have a Nielsen box at home, you don't count in the ratings that are published every week. So basically, it doesn't matter if you watch or don't watch for these numbers. The best way to help is probably to watch the show online, I think that counts, whether you watch live on one of their apps or the next day when the episode is available on streaming: http://www.nbc.com/days-of-our-lives/episodes I understand what janem says, now is probably not the best time to quit watching because the show's life hangs in the balance. But at the same time, I can't blame people who lost interest. It's not easy to force yourself to watch. I think the show will get another renewal thanks to the good November sweeps numbers but who knows? |

I don't think anyone that has said they are no longer watching is "bragging" about not watching. I for one have stated I'm no longer watching, but I'm certainly not bragging about it. I need to vent my feelings and at this point no one has told me I can't do that. Topics come up and I feel the need to respond. Why am I still at the DAYS section of this board? Because despite my anger, it's hard to let go. And maybe part of me hopes things will change, even though I know they won't. It's also about grief. It's a process of letting go. I feel like (whether it's logical or not and whether it's true or not) that my couple got screwed over royally (along with Haiden and WilSon fans). My couple is still alive physically as far as I know, but it doesn't numb the pain at all. This board right now is my only link to DAYS and despite how much I despise (and yes that is truly how I feel about the show right now) the writing and decisions that have been made, I still need a link because that link is also a link to Eric and Nicole for me. Do I think I affect ratings, nope. I'm honestly not sure if it's just Nielson families or not because I think they get ratings in different ways now, but I'm not sure. I'm angry and frustrated with the show and I don't watch mostly because it makes me feel like I at least have that measure of control, to not give the show my time. That doesn't mean I don't care about DAYS because I do. It breaks my heart that I can't bare to watch anymore. And part of it is honestly that I just have no interest in the stories these writers want to write and the one story I am interested in they refuse to give any attention to. |

I've watched off and on over the years, mostly on, but I've taken long breaks since 2000. When I give up and take a break, I don't follow the boards at all. I'd hate for Days to be cancelled, but when the stories are meaningless and characters empty or worse completely wrecked, I almost think it would be better for it to be cancelled. As long as the writers are trying to write real stories and not simply swapping characters in for plot purposes and trashing the things I love about them, I'll watch to see where things go. I don't threaten to quit if I hear of an upcoming plot. Too many crazy plots that sounded awful have turned out really good, and to me the worst thing that can happen is NO upcoming story anyway. I will quit if I watch and all stories are so bad that it just makes me mad. Aka, I loved the idea of Kristen coming back. But the Brady and John stuff made me tune out because it was so out of character to me. Had other stories been good, I may have kept watching, but nothing appealed to me at all. I do tend to watch for my favorite characters/couples. I am sad I missed the end of Kristen, because I've added Chad to my list of characters I like, and wish I'd seen him save Marlena. :) |

I don't see people bragging about not watching, just venting that they're not getting anything from the show currently so are on a break. I hardly think those people have the power to get the show cancelled, and the ratings have been steadily going up the last few months. People have the right to be upset with the show, and say how they feel. I also haven't seen anyone here on DR wish for the show to be cancelled. Not being interested in the show or not watching is not the same as not caring, imo! If they didn't care they probably wouldn't be venting or still posting. That they are is a sign that they do care. I've watched Days on/off for a very long time. I've stopped at times due to being busy with life, I've stopped when the show had nothing going on to interest me. I've always been a Days fan though, would never wish for it to be cancelled, even if I'm no longer watching. I'm not happy with the show currently, mainly because my 2 favs have all but disappeared, and 1 if not both have been fired, but I'm still watching, will watch until they're gone, after that I will have to see how I feel about the show and if there are any storylines that I feel like watching. But if I do quit the show again, I will still hope for it to do well, I will probably still post here at DR because it's a part of my life, Days is a part of my life. I quit GH but continued to follow the show for years, continued to be active on message boards, until the time that I totally lost interest in the show and then I stopped doing both. I'm still watching, every single day, but only because I have to as part of my job. If I had any choice in the matter, I would have quit watching months ago. I have, more or less, quit reading and posting in the threads here; I just visit the site to get the spoilers (again, only because I have to), and that's about it. I don't even read those anymore until the day I need them, because I couldn't possibly care less about what's happening now. Not to piss anyone off, but frankly, at this point, I hate the show so much that, again, I couldn't possibly care less if it were canceled. In fact, I find myself hoping every day that it will be, because it would serve the writers right after the horribly disrespectful way they treated Will and Sonny's fanbase. Yes, I know the cancellation of the show could never truly be attributed to any one factor, but, personally, I would take it as a vindication of sorts. Mostly, though, I just want the show canceled so I no longer have to watch it, because I can't stand anything about it anymore. That's the emotional, bitter part of me talking. The rational part of me doesn't really want to see hundreds of people lose their jobs, and millions of people lose a show they (presumably) still love, but, at the end of the day, that's really not my problem. And, at the end of the day, I know that I have absolutely no bearing whatsoever on whether the show gets canceled or renewed. I'm not a Nielsen household; I'm not watching online; I'm not tweeting about the show; I'm not badmouthing the show to my friends and family because none of them watch it, anyway; I'm not doing anything whatsoever to affect the show's ratings (which suits me just fine because if I have to keep watching, at least I know they aren't getting any benefit out of it). So I don't feel the least bit guilty about hoping the show will get canceled, because I know that hope isn't going to get it canceled. If it gets canceled, it won't be because of me. I'm not that important. Heh. Besides, we've been told that Will is never going to be resurrected, so it's not like I have any hope that keeping the show on the air will eventually give me back what I want, anyway. Maybe they'll backpedal on that stance eventually, but I'm not going to get my hopes up for maybes and eventuallys. |

I stopped watching regularly shortly after Jack was killed off. I just found the show to be turning into something that was too different from what I remember. All of my favorites were all either gone from the show or pretty much seemed to be as you hardly seen them. I went from watching nearly every day to about once a month and then nothing at all. I just started up again though over the last few months as they are again showing characters who I actually recognize and grew up watching. A near constant influx of new actors and characters just makes me turn things off. |

I find myself still watching every day out of loyalty and habit. But my FF button is getting a workout. I'm really not getting much from the individual stories these days. Oh, I'll admit the writing has improved, and many days the dialog/acting is incredible. But it doesn't add up to a meaningful whole for me. And I cannot -- cannot -- with the new style: one neverending day, characters clustered in tiny groups, no feeling of community or interaction, villains with absolutely no subtlety (man or woman, they might as well be twirling big waxy mustaches), and Salemites given little time to actually grieve or react to all the mayhem around them. Hmmmmm -- not sure if even loyalty or habit will be enough! |

Thank you all for your replies. Let me just say this. So many of you say you are just one person, and don't matter, but collectively, you all add up. Also, I understand that newer TVs have a chip or something inside, which enables ratings people to know what is being watched. I know TV Guide publishes the top 40 or 50 shows (this is prime time) and is able to count those who record and watch within 3 days. I have also been disappointed, aggravated, annoyed, etc. In fact, at one point, the characters who got me watching were ALL gone, but I guess I just stuck it out, got interested in others, aggravated with others, etc. :) Again, thank you, I do appreciate the replies. |

I quit watching when TomSell decided it was OK to write Bo Brady off as a nobody that did not matter; to take a long standing, romantic beloved leading man and decide to write him as a deserter, a man who abandoned his family. I stopped watching, did not care if the show lasted or not (the only other time that happened is when KC recast Bo with rkk who was NEVER Bo and made life miserable for actresses), and paid little attention, did not go to any boards, until one day on Twitter (I follow Peter Reckell, Kelly, his wife, MBE) hints started coming that Bo might return to Salem. I sensed from Peter that he had been upset too about how Bo was trashed. So I started coming back to the bbs, to get info. I am thrilled that Bo's heroic status on the show was brought back, that Bo once again was written as the character so many knew and loved for decades, was brought back. I was saddened that Bo was being killed off, wished Peter stayed longer, but thoroughly respect his life choice. I cried a lot but was impressed with the writing/acting (compressed as it was). Now, I am still watching and posting. For how long I do not know. I want to see Hope resolve her guilt, anger and grieve for Bo with her children. I like Kayla and Steve, and am enjoying this version of Chad, and like him with Abby. Are they enough to keep me? Don't know. If writers force feed ROPE, probably not. Hope should move on but having Rafe tell Hope on the day Bo was buried he loved her put me in nausea territory. I want to give Rafe a second chance. I was as sick of him as I was Daniel when they first came on. Daniel, Rafe and Brady were, for me, three of the most pushed leading men I have ever seen. They all three have been paired over and over and over and over, given story after story after story and REMAINED DULL AS DIRT. An actor/character either has the charisma or does not. PR/Bo had it from day one. So did KA. As did MBE. As did SN. So did DDH and DH. So did JA. So does BF. And not just with a romantic pairing. These characters/actors had it across the board, with siblings, with friends, with parents (I know I left a lot out but you get the gist). So did James Scott but sadly the writers went so OVER THE TOP with some of his evil did and insisting on his pairing with Sami......turned me off. Imo, GV has it way more than EM or GG and yet he is gone. When a writing team has to work overtime forcing a character there is a problem. So some bad choices by the writing team can send me off again. I am already a bit unsettled by the lack of common sense from dialogue writers. But I will see. Like I said, I came back after Bo Brady's trashing was UNdone. Whether I stay or not depends on the writing. Force feeding pairings does not work. Overuse of an OBVIOUS writer favorites sends me packing. Lack of common sense umbrella stories and overuse of gimmicks sends me packing. |
